I really like K, and I can't figure out why. It's clearly a series the makers put a lot of thought into, but they weren't able to explain it well in the anime proper. Instead you have to read all the novels, drama CDs, and interviews to understand the game mechanics. With the anime itself, what you think would be the showcase for the series, K comes off as pretty shallow with character clichés thrown together into a nonsensical plot. Even with all this background crap that wasn't mentioned in the show itself, I would say it's okay at best, but for some reason I really, really enjoy it, and I would never ever recommend it to anyone.
Sometimes I feel people aren't able to separate what is "favorite" versus what is "best." My favorite game of all time is Okami, but I can list its flaws easily: It's not paced well, it's really easy, and the final boss is disappointing. Would I call it the best game of all time? No. "Best" admittedly is subjective, but I could definitely think of something without such flaws.
I'm a person who gets heavily obsessed with a series and often my entire life for a while will revolve around it, but I'm still able to step back and say, "Yeah, I can understand why someone wouldn't like it." But I think others are not, which is why you have fandom fights like Star Wars versus Star Trek. Or people taking it personally if you don't care about a sports team or a band. To the point that votes for politicians are dependent on it? I remember reading how shocked people were that Obama used a Zune back in 2008, and some said they wouldn't choose him when they went to the polling station. It's a fucking mp3 player? How does that explain his views on constitutional rights, taxation, military spending, or whatever?
Well, I suppose I should be happy enough that people do like K enough that they're willing to translate all that peripheral crap for me because otherwise I'd be completely lost.
