As I stated before, I've been watching Hercule Poirot, and I've noticed something odd with the subtitles. Poirot is Belgian and peppers his speech with random French words or phrases. Occasionally you'd have a full conversation, but most of the time it's something like incroyable (unbelieveable), c'est impossible (it's impossible), or maintenant regardez (now watch). Clearly the person writing this was not given access to the script because the subtitles just freak out whenever this happens. Sometimes when he says a whole sentence, the subtitles just put [French] as if it's incomprehensible to our ears. Which is also what they do sometimes, because instead of [French] occasionally they'll just write [inaudile]. One noble soul dearly tried and wrote "may wee" for mais oui. But my favorite one, and this happens probably 10% of the time, is when Poirot says, "Comment?" (How?) The subtitler puts, "Como?" as if we're suddenly speaking Spanish. That final vowel doesn't even sound similar!
